Gas cost for a trip
Type the distance, your fuel economy and the fuel price. You get the fuel cost and each person's share. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Changing a unit only changes its label. The answer is in the money you type the price in.
Fuel cost
Fill in distance, fuel economy and fuel price.
Working
How Tripcost works
Everything is turned into kilometres and litres first, then the cost is worked out exactly with whole-number fractions, so no step rounds early.
Formula. Fuel used = distance x fuel per distance. Cost = fuel used x price per unit of fuel. A round trip doubles the distance first.
Constants. 1 mile = 1.609344 km. 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 litres. 1 UK gallon = 4.54609 litres. mpg US and mpg UK use the matching gallon. 1 km per litre = 100 litres per 100 km.
Rounding. The total is rounded half up to 2 decimals on the exact value, so 1.505 shows 1.51. Each person's share is the total divided by the number of people, rounded up to the next cent, so the group covers the total.
What you type. Distance and people may use commas in groups of three. Fuel economy and fuel price must use a dot for decimals, so 1,50 is refused rather than read as 150.
Not included. Fuel only. No tolls, parking, wear, electric charging or currency conversion, and no route or price lookup. Nothing you type is stored or sent.
